Armagnac Laterrade - 25 years - Cask Strength - 42% | Clos des Spiritueux
At the heart of Mauvezin-d’Armagnac, the Laterrade house passionately perpetuates the Gascon tradition of great eaux-de-vie, faithful to their terroir, unique history, and complexity acquired during long decades of barrel aging. Vincent Laterrade, a trained sommelier, has distinguished himself with his flair as a “treasure hunter,” exploring producers’ cellars in search of forgotten barrels and rare lots preserved within wine families. This expertise has allowed him to build an exceptional collection of vintage armagnacs, some dating back to 1904, offering remarkable continuity to the present day, especially since 1959. Each vintage retains the signature of its estate of origin, while blends are made with the same demand for traceability and coherence. Innovative, the Laterrade house has also been producing organic armagnacs from grapes grown according to organic farming since 2017. Today, Paulina Laterrade manages the brand’s commercial development, supported by Alexandra who is gradually investing in this family adventure. Despite the diversity of terroirs and ages, a common thread remains: to enhance the fruit, wood, and time, without artifice or embellishment, to reveal all the nobility of armagnac.
The Armagnac Laterrade 25 years Cask Strength embodies the perfect alliance of the two greatest terroirs of the appellation: the Bas-Armagnac of Landes, known for its tawny sands, source of elegance and fruity aromas, and the Ténarèze, whose boulbènes and clay-limestone soils confer structure and depth. Mainly made from Baco and Ugni blanc grapes, this armagnac is distilled according to the traditional Armagnac single-pass method. All the eaux-de-vie in this blend have aged at least twenty-five years in oak barrels, benefiting from a slow exchange between alcohol, wood, and oxygen to achieve perfect harmony. Vincent Laterrade favors certain “forgotten casks” whose strength has naturally decreased during long aging, allowing the ideal concentration of 42% to be reached without adding water. Bottling is done without reduction, coloring, or filtration to preserve the aromatic integrity and richness of the matter.
The color of this 25-year Armagnac seduces with its deep amber hue, enhanced by copper and mahogany reflections. The expressive nose reveals, from the opening, generous aromas of candied plum, dried fig, and orange peel, enriched with subtle notes of beeswax, walnut, and blond tobacco. With aeration, darker nuances of cocoa, sweet licorice, cinnamon, and old wood appear, while maintaining the freshness of the fruit. On the palate, the breadth and depth testify to its long aging, while the natural 42% balance gives it a supple and elegant texture. Flavors of stewed fruits, roasted almond, coffee, brown spices, and delicate rancio are found, sublimated by an enveloping and precise length. The finish stretches on notes of walnut, candied citrus, and polished wood, offering a controlled and persistent warmth. The Armagnac Laterrade 25 years Cask Strength reveals all its complexity after a few minutes of aeration in the glass. It perfectly accompanies an apple croustade, a dark chocolate dessert, prunes in red wine, or an aged Comté, but is also appreciated alone as an exceptional digestif.
