The prestigious Depaz Distillery is located in the heart of Martinique, nestled on the iconic slopes of Mount Pelée in the north of the island. Originally dedicated to the cultivation of tobacco, indigo, and livestock farming, these fertile lands were quickly transformed by Victor Depaz for intensive sugarcane cultivation, a sector that experienced significant growth thanks to major advances in distillation techniques. However, on May 8, 1902, Mount Pelée erupted, destroying the town of Saint-Pierre. Victor Depaz, then a student in Bordeaux, learned of the tragedy and the loss of his family. Orphaned and ruined, he exiled himself to Canada. During a stopover in Martinique, he decided to return to Saint-Pierre and reclaimed the Périnelle estate, his birthplace. On May 8, 1917, fifteen years after the disaster, he restarted his distillery, powered by the 521 hectares of sugarcane he now owned on the slopes of Mount Pelée. He built a family home there, a faithful replica of the old Périnelle Estate, nicknamed "Château Depaz," where he settled in 1922 with his wife and eleven children. In the 1950s, his sons, André and Raoul Depaz, took over and modernized production, making the Depaz distillery one of the most respected in Martinique.
Today, the Depaz distillery retains its artisanal character as one of the smallest production units on the island. True to its heritage, it still operates using an old steam engine, the true beating heart of the factory, which provides the steam necessary to power the mills for crushing sugarcane and to feed the distillation columns, thus preserving an authentic and traditional know-how.
This rare and exclusive Private Cask edition is an exceptional aged agricole rum, beginning its maturation on November 15, 2010. It benefited from an exemplary aging of 11 years in French oak barrels (barrel No. 102), a preferred choice to enhance the complex and deep aromas of this exceptional rum. This limited release includes only 428 bottles, giving each bottle a precious rarity sought after by rum enthusiasts and collectors of exceptional rums.
