The birth of JM rums begins in the heart of lush vegetation, where one of the most beautiful distilleries in Martinique is located, at the Fonds-Préville estate in Macouba. The first distillations took place in 1845, thanks to the visionary initiative of Jean-Marie Martin, who stamped his initials "JM" on his rums, thus marking the beginning of a tradition of excellence. At the beginning of the 20th century, around 1912, the distillery was taken over by Ernest Crassous de Médeuil and his brother Gustave, manager and owner of the Bellevue estate. Following numerous improvements, the two estates merged to give birth to the Habitation Fonds-Préville as we know it today. The Bernard Hayot Group is now the majority shareholder of SCA Héritiers Crassous de Médeuil, thus guaranteeing the sustainability and quality of this prestigious terroir.
The sugar canes are cultivated on the Fonds-Préville estate, which covers 225 hectares, to ensure optimal quality of the raw material from an exceptional terroir: the steep slopes of Montagne Pelée. The fermented juices are carefully distilled in two traditional Creole copper columns, at a degree not exceeding 72°, thus preserving all the aromatic authenticity of the local canes. The distillery benefits from the supply of pure spring water from Montagne Pelée, a key element that contributes to the finesse and purity of JM rums.
