Located in the north of Martinique, at the heart of Habitation Bellevue nestled on the majestic slopes of Mount Pelée, this iconic distillery benefits from a humid tropical climate and exceptionally rich volcanic soils. These unique conditions offer a fertile terroir ideal for cultivating exceptional sugarcane, guaranteeing an authentic and refined agricole rum. In 1914, Gustave Crassous de Médeuil acquired the J.M Rum Distillery from the family of Jean-Marie Martin. For over a century, the Crassous de Médeuil heirs have perpetuated this family tradition, meticulously ensuring the excellence of Rhum J.M production, a true jewel of Martinican heritage.
The sugarcanes, cultivated with meticulous care and rigorously selected, are crushed in mills within less than an hour after harvesting. This rapidity is an essential specificity that guarantees intensely fresh cane juice, rich in subtle and complex aromas. Rhum J.M stands out as one of the few distilleries in Martinique to use exclusively pure spring water sourced from the depths of Mount Pelée. This crystalline water, naturally rich in minerals, imparts the rums with depth of flavor and incomparable finesse. The traditional agricole rum distillation is carried out in two Creole-style copper columns, an ancestral know-how that enhances each distillate. The barrels, precisely selected and preheated by charring, contribute to a controlled aging process. Year after year, the cellar master performs a meticulous topping up of the barrels with rums of the same age to preserve the typicity and harmony unique to each vintage.
This Rhum Vieux J.M, distilled in 2013, was carefully aged in Bourbon barrels chosen in April 2014 for its slow and natural refinement. This rare and careful maturation gives it exceptional aromatic richness and remarkable gustatory complexity. Bottled in July 2023, this vintage rum embodies the pinnacle of Martinican tradition and excellence.
