The story of the Assier family in Martinique begins in 1710, when Jean Assier, a young lawyer from Montpellier, arrived on the island and entered the service of Governor Phélypeaux. Several centuries later, his direct descendant, Yves Assier de Pompignan, carries a bold and passionate project: the creation of a unique rum distillery embodying the rich history and diversity of the Caribbean terroir. The acquisition of the Habitation du Simon, located in the heart of an exceptional terroir, along with Yves Assier de Pompignan's unwavering passion for Martinique, made it possible to bring to life a rum brand brilliantly blending ancestral tradition and modern innovation.
In 2010, the project took shape with the launch of a rigorous selection of great aged rums intended for exceptional blends. An aging cellar, equipped with barrels that previously contained Cognac, as well as a dedicated laboratory, were set up at the Habitation. The first selections, aged 6 to 11 years, benefit from additional aging in 320-liter French oak barrels, ensuring complexity and balance. At the same time, Yves Assier directed distillation towards an innovative and high-quality method by choosing a copper Charentais still, doubled with a seven-plate column. The use of fermentation tanks with controlled temperature allows long fermentations, ensuring sugar cane wines with incomparable aromatic potential. After demanding administrative procedures, authorization to open an Agricultural Rum distillery was obtained on December 31, 2015. Installed in an 18th-century former sugar purging house, the distillery finally came to life. In December 2016, Yves Assier de Pompignan and his team proudly inaugurated the A1710 distillery, the result of ten years of learning and passion.
The A1710 Rums are produced according to a strict organic specification, from sugar canes grown without fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or any chemical products. This unique terroir includes two emblematic varieties: the Blue Cane and the Purple Cane, planted directly on site and cultivated with respect for the environment. This sustainable and authentic approach gives A1710 rums an exceptional aromatic richness, while highlighting the Martinican terroir and its ancestral know-how.
