The captivating story of the Assier family in Martinique begins in 1710, when Jean Assier, a young lawyer from Montpellier, settled on the island and served within the administration of Governor Phélypeaux. Several centuries later, his legacy is carried on by his direct descendant, Yves Assier de Pompignan, a passionate visionary who undertakes a unique and bold project: the creation of an iconic rum distillery, reflecting a rich tradition and the unique terroir of the Antilles. This human adventure begins with the acquisition of Habitation du Simon, located in the heart of an exceptional terroir in Martinique, and is driven by an unwavering passion for this island and its natural treasures. Motivated by this deep attachment, Yves Assier de Pompignan has been working for several years to build an innovative rum brand that brilliantly combines authentic tradition and modernity, to offer rums of superior quality.
In 2010, the project took shape with the rigorous selection of the best aged rums intended for exceptional blends. A dedicated aging cellar was equipped, including an authentic Cognac barrel and an analysis laboratory installed at the Habitation. The first vintages, aged 6 to 11 years at this stage, were placed in 320-liter French oak barrels, where they continued to mature to reveal their aromatic complexity. At the same time, in-depth technical research led Yves Assier to choose a full copper Charentais still, equipped with a seven-plate column, combining respect for traditional methods and innovation for perfect distillation. The cellar also relies on temperature-controlled fermentation tanks, allowing long and slow fermentations that develop cane wines rich in natural aromas. After a long administrative process, the official opening of the distillery was authorized on December 31, 2015, dedicated exclusively to the production of high-end Agricultural Rums. The distillery is located in an old 18th-century sugar purging house, right in the heart of the estate. In December 2016, after ten years of passion, effort, and research, the A1710 distillery was proudly inaugurated by Yves Assier de Pompignan and his team, marking a historic turning point in the production of exceptional rums.
A1710 Rums are proudly produced according to a strict organic specification, from sugarcane grown without any use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, or other harmful inputs. The dedicated plots, located directly on site, host two rare and flavorful varieties: the "Blue Cane" and the "Purple Cane", which give these rums a natural, complex, and elegant aromatic signature, unique to the most protected Martinican terroirs.
