L’Habitation Clément is located in the heart of the charming village of François, in Martinique, an area renowned for the exceptional quality of its agricultural products. This historic rum distillery was founded in 1887 by the visionary Homère Clément, then a highly respected mayor of François, who took on a unique challenge after acquiring an estate during the sugar crisis. It is the prestigious Domaine de l’Acajou, a 43-acre plantation recognized as one of the best sugar estates in Martinique, emblematic of an exceptional terroir. Facing the collapse of the sugar sector, Homère Clément showed innovation and transformed this traditional estate into a renowned producer of high-quality agricultural rum. Using traditional methods but with an innovative approach, he encouraged planters to cultivate sugar cane not to produce refined sugar but to extract an aromatic and rich cane juice, intended for the distillation of a pure rum intensely marked by its original terroir.
Inspired by the prestigious eaux-de-vie he discovered during his studies in Paris, notably the famous Armagnacs of the Southwest, Homère perfected a unique production technique. This artisanal method, now the reference for Rhum Agricole, relies on using the first pressing of freshly harvested cane juice. After the death of Charles Clément, his son, the house was taken over by George-Louis and Jean-José Clément, then acquired in 1986 by the GBH group, which remains the owner to this day. The original distillery has been transformed into a museum dedicated to rum and its history, while distillation is now carried out at the Distillerie du Simon, a few kilometers from François, before meticulous aging in the prestigious Clément cellars.
