TROIS RIVIERES - Cask Strength 2006 - Single Cask Loge 23 - 55.5%
The famous Plantation of Trois Rivières is a fundamental element of the rich historical and cultural heritage of Martinique. Founded in 1660, it originated from the acquisition of 2,000 hectares by Nicolas Fouquet, superintendent of King Louis XIV, in the south of the island. In 1785, Etienne Isaïe Marraud Des Grottes, an influential landowner from northern Martinique, bought the lands of Trois Rivières and integrated rum production into the already established sugar tradition. During the 18th and 19th centuries, the plantation specialized in sugarcane cultivation before initiating, at the beginning of the 20th century, the distillation of Agricole rum, which became its sole production from 1940 onward. In 1994, the distillery was acquired by the B.B.S. company, already owner of La Mauny rums, thus strengthening its expertise. In 1996, Trois Rivières proudly received the AOC label (Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée of Martinique), unique worldwide for a rum, certifying its authenticity and exceptional quality. The evocative name of this distillery comes from the three historic rivers that irrigate its sugarcane fields: Oman, Bois d’Inde, and Saint Pierre.
The artisanal production process begins with a meticulous harvest of sugarcanes in February, a period when sugar content is optimal. The canes are immediately cut and crushed within 24 hours to extract the vesou (cane juice), which is then transferred to open vats for a natural fermentation lasting 24 to 30 hours. Under the action of yeasts, the vesou transforms into cane wine, which is then precisely distilled in a Creole column still, ensuring the finesse and richness of its characteristic aromas. Maturation takes place in oak barrels with a maximum capacity of 650 liters for a minimum period of 3 years, giving the rum roundness, complexity, and elegance.
