RHUM CLÉMENT - Vintage 1970 - 44% ABV
L’Habitation Clément is located in the heart of François, in Martinique, an island globally renowned for the exceptional quality of its agricultural rums. Founded in 1887 by Homère Clément, this exceptional rum distillery was born at a time when the sugar crisis was severely impacting the region. An influential and well-regarded man, Homère Clément was then mayor of François and a respected member of the Martinican community. He acquired the prestigious sugar plantation called Domaine de l’Acajou, a 43-acre estate considered one of the most renowned in Martinique.
While the local sugar economy was experiencing a marked decline, leading to a difficult period that unfortunately ended in bankruptcy, Homère Clément did not give up. Thanks to wise investments, he transformed this historic plantation into a producer of high-end agricultural rum, now recognized worldwide. His revolutionary vision was to revive sugarcane plantations, no longer to produce refined sugar, but to press the cane and harvest an aromatic and flavorful cane juice from the first pressing, an essential base for the distillation of pure and authentic rum.
Strongly inspired by his studies in Paris, where he discovered the great eaux-de-vie, Homère Clément reproduced the rigor and finesse of the distillers of the famous Armagnacs from the Southwest of France. This expertise allowed the perfection of a unique method, still today emblematic of Martinican agricultural rum.
Upon the death of his son Charles Clément, the house passed to George-Louis and Jean-José Clément, then was acquired by the GBH group in 1986, which remains the owner. The original distillery is now closed and transformed into a museum, a living testimony to the history and know-how of the house. The production of Clément rum is currently carried out at the Distillerie du Simon, located a few kilometers from François, before the exceptional rums are patiently aged in the historic cellars of Habitation Clément.
