The Saint-James Distillery is located in Martinique, at the heart of one of the most prestigious regions for producing exceptional agricole rum. Its history began in the 19th century with Reverend Edmond Lefébure, Superior Father at the Brothers of Charity convent and a chemistry enthusiast. He quickly recognized the unique potential of the cane spirits distilled around his hospital and undertook to produce them himself, thus laying the foundation for a prestigious tradition. In 1973, the famous Cointreau house acquired the Saint-James Rums and centralized production in Sainte-Marie, the historic cradle of Martinican distillation. Then, in 2003, the distillery joined the La Martiniquaise group, which is now its owner, ensuring quality, authenticity, and expertise.
Saint James rum is made from natural fermentation, followed by integral distillation in a traditional Creole column from pure sugarcane juice, an artisanal method recognized by the A.O.C Rhum de la Martinique. This exclusive process gives Saint James rums exceptional aromatic richness and remarkable aging capacity in oak barrels, offering refined and complex profiles highly appreciated by premium rum enthusiasts. True to authenticity, no sweeteners or artificial substances are allowed, guaranteeing purity and impeccable quality in every bottle. The distillery is also committed to a circular and sustainable economy to minimize its environmental impact. The sugarcane fields, cultivated around the distillery, promote eco-responsible logistics and significantly reduce CO2 emissions related to transport. Bagasse, the fibrous residue from pressing the cane, is used as green fuel to produce the steam essential for operating the distillation columns and mills. Part of this bagasse is also transformed into compost or converted into electricity via an innovative turbo-alternator. Furthermore, vinasse, the liquid by-product of distillation, is rigorously treated to generate pure water, used to sustainably irrigate the sugarcane plantations.
