Whisky BENROMACH - 20th Anniversary - Vintage 1998 - 56.2%
Benromach is an iconic distillery in the Speyside region of Scotland, founded by the visionaries Duncan McCallum and F.W. Brickman in 1898. Today, it is proudly owned and operated by the prestigious spirits merchant Gordon & MacPhail based in Elgin. Strategically located near Forres in Morayshire, the distillery draws its pure, crystalline water from the natural springs of Chapelton, nestled in the heart of the Romach hills, close to Forres. Duncan MacCallum, formerly master distiller at Glen Nevis in Campbeltown, and F.W. Brickman, a respected spirits broker in Leith, Edinburgh, infused Benromach with unique passion and expertise. Construction began in 1898, but production truly started only in 1900, despite a brief halt that same year due to financial constraints. Purchased in 1911 by Harvey McNair & Co in London, Benromach endured the turmoil of World War I before being managed by Benromach Distillery Ltd until 1925. In 1938, the distillery joined Associated Scottish Distilleries Ltd, which became Scottish Malt Distillers Ltd. Between 1966 and 1974, it underwent significant modernization but closed in 1983. In 1993, thanks to the vision of Gordon & MacPhail, it was reborn and resumed production in 1997, with a slight design adaptation to allow autonomous operation. In 1998, Charles, Prince of Wales, honored the distillery with his presence at its official reopening, while bottling of the revived malt began in 2004.
True to the ancient Speyside tradition of rekindling fires with peat pieces when coal was scarce, Benromach uses locally grown Scottish barley malted with a subtle touch of peat smoke. This technique imparts a unique character, complemented by maturation in carefully selected oak casks, previously used for aging Bourbon or Sherry, giving this whisky an exceptional aromatic complexity.
Distilled in 1998, this exceptional vintage commemorates 20 years of distilling excellence at Benromach. This rare edition, limited to only 3,000 bottles, is a treasure sought after by fine whisky enthusiasts and collectors.
