BIELLE - Exceptional Very Old Rum - Vintage 2011 - 42%
Bielle is an iconic distillery located on the paradisiacal island of Marie-Galante, known by the evocative name "island of 100 mills." The prestigious history of Bielle dates back to 1769, when Jean-Pierre Bielle initially cultivated coffee there. In 1826, his sons joined forces to establish a 53-hectare refinery-sugar factory. Rum production on the estate began at the start of the 20th century, with a succession of owners, including Félix Bicoto who, in 1935, built the majestic main house still visible today. After World War II, the property was neglected until 1956, when Paul Rameaux bought it. However, it remained dormant until Dominique Thierry, a young engineer and Paul's grand-nephew, took over the Société d’Exploitation de la Distillerie Bielle (S.E.D.B.). Over forty years, the distillery established itself as one of the most renowned and respected in the French Antilles.
The sugarcane used comes both from the estate and from small local producers, several of whom maintain traditional methods such as transport using the cabrouet, an ox-drawn cart. On site, two mechanical mills gently extract the cane juice, which is then fermented for 48 hours. Distillation is carried out using three stainless steel Savalle columns, ensuring exceptional purity and finesse. The rum is then bottled at the historic strength of 59°, or aged in cellars to develop complexity and depth.
