Bielle is an iconic distillery located on the paradisiacal island of Marie-Galante, also known as the island of 100 mills, referring to its rich agricultural heritage. The prestigious history of Bielle begins in 1769 when Jean-Pierre Bielle initially cultivated coffee, before his sons founded in 1826 a refinery-sugar factory spread over 53 hectares, laying the foundations for exceptional agricultural production. Rum distillation started at the beginning of the 20th century. The estate changed hands several times until Félix Bicoto built the main house in 1935, which remains a symbol of authenticity. After World War II, the property was temporarily abandoned before being taken over in 1956 by Paul Rameaux. However, it was thanks to his great-nephew, the visionary engineer Dominique Thierry, that the Société d’Exploitation de la Distillerie Bielle (S.E.D.B.) flourished, becoming in forty years one of the most renowned distilleries in the French Antilles.
The sugarcane, passionately cultivated on the estate and by local small producers, is sometimes harvested using the traditional cabrouet, an ox cart typical of the region, ensuring ancestral methods respectful of the terroir. At the distillery, two mills extract the cane juice, which is then fermented for 48 hours before being carefully distilled in three stainless steel Savalle columns. This ancestral know-how gives birth to a powerful agricultural white rum, bottled at the exceptional historical strength of 59%, or destined for controlled aging in the cellars to express the full aromatic richness of the terroir.
