CARDHU - 12 years - 40% ABV
Cardhu is an iconic distillery in the Speyside region, located near Archiestown, in Moray, Scotland. Founded in 1824 by the famous whisky smuggler John Cumming and his wife Helen, it embodies a rich Scottish tradition. The distillery was long managed by Helen Cumming, who, with ingenuity and courage, sold bottles of whisky directly to passersby through the window of their farmhouse. Thanks to the distillery's strategic position on a hill, Helen could spot the arrival of the police, quickly cover herself in flour pretending to be baking bread to mask the smell of distillation, then offer them tea while raising a flag to alert neighboring distilleries – a living testament to local resilience and solidarity. In 1885, the distillery was completely rebuilt on a new site, with modern stills that tripled production capacity, marking a major industrial turning point. These old Cardhu stills were sold to William Grant, who later founded the famous Glenfiddich distillery. Today, Cardhu belongs to the Diageo group and plays a crucial role as an essential component of prestigious blends such as Johnnie Walker. The name "Cardhu" comes from the Gaelic "Carn Dubh," meaning "Black Rock," highlighting the deep and authentic roots of this distillery in the Scottish terroir.
