CARDHU - 15 years - 40% ABV
Cardhu is an iconic distillery in the Speyside region, located near Archiestown, in Moray, Scotland. Founded in 1824 by the famous whisky smuggler John Cumming and his wife Helen, this distillery has a fascinating history. Production and management were mainly handled by Helen Cumming, who cleverly sold bottles of whisky to passersby through the window of their farm. Thanks to the distillery's strategic position on a hill, Helen could spot the arrival of the police, mask the smell of distillation by dusting herself with flour, and pretend to be baking bread. She would then welcome the authorities with tea while discreetly raising a flag outside to alert neighboring distilleries, allowing them to act quickly in case of danger. In 1885, the distillery was completely rebuilt on a new site, and the old stills were sold to William Grant, who founded the famous Glenfiddich distillery. The new equipment and building allowed Cardhu to triple its production, strengthening its position in the Scottish whisky market. Today, the distillery is managed by the giant Diageo, and Cardhu whisky plays a vital role in the prestigious Johnnie Walker blends. The name "Cardhu" comes from the Gaelic "Carn Dubh", literally meaning "Black Rock", a tribute to its unique terroir.
