VILANOVA - Cuvée Berbie - Single Malt - Whisky from France - 46%
The Castan Distillery is located in Villeneuve-sur-Vèbre, in the heart of the Tarn, a region renowned for its artisanal expertise and exceptional terroirs. Founded in 1941 by Gilbert Castan and his son Jacques, itinerant distillers, the distillery continues a unique family tradition. Traveling through the villages of Tarn and Aveyron with their mobile still, they distilled fruits from locals, a historic practice now disappeared. Facing these changes, Sébastien Castan, third generation, reinvented this ancestral craft by dedicating himself entirely to producing exceptional whisky.
The distillery relies on sustainable and local agriculture: it rotates the cultivation of various cereals, especially favoring brewing barley, on its lands around the distillery. This family farm has been certified organic since 2016, ensuring full respect for the environment and optimal quality of raw materials. The organic barley grains are then sent to a rigorously selected external malt house, while the pure, mineralized water used comes from a deep source at 110 meters, enhancing the unique and authentic character of the whisky.
Distillation is carried out in a red copper still dating from 1929, passed down by grandfather Gilbert Castan and carefully modernized over the years to combine tradition and innovation. The first Tarn Whisky was distilled in February 2010, then bottled in April 2013, marking the emergence of an exceptional artisanal French whisky.
Vilanova Berbie is the very first Single Malt expression produced by the Castan Distillery. This whisky is distinguished by its aging in French oak casks that previously held white wine, bringing subtle and complex notes that delight connoisseurs. It embodies the perfect marriage between French terroir, traditional know-how, and contemporary innovation.
