Compass Box Whisky is a prestigious Scottish whisky production company, founded in 2000 by the visionary American John Glaser. After a brilliant career in the wine trade and valuable experience at the famous distiller Johnnie Walker, John Glaser decided to create his own artisanal whisky company, starting in his kitchen. Ten years later, Compass Box has established itself as a benchmark thanks to its quality whiskies, carefully blended in its premises in Scotland and its office in London. The brand sources exceptional oak from cooperages in the Vosges region of France and the wooded areas of Missouri in the United States, thus ensuring a unique maturation. Each cask is rigorously selected for its characteristics, then the blended whiskies are matured between six months and three years in specific casks to develop rich aromas and subtle character.
In 2015, this bold company sparked a true revolution in the industry by unveiling an unprecedented level of transparency on its labels, including the original distilleries, types of casks, ages, and exact proportions of the blends. This commitment gave rise to a pioneering campaign for Scottish whisky transparency, promoted by John Glaser, which aims to encourage all producers to practice full openness about the composition of blends, thus offering connoisseurs a clearer and more authentic experience.
This limited edition of Peat Monster was specially created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the range while paying tribute to the major influence of America in the world of Scottish whisky. Originally created in 2003 by James Saxon and Alex Driver for the Goldstein family at the legendary Park Avenue Liquor Shop in New York, this peated whisky named “Monster” quickly met with resounding success. Its success led to the development of an exclusive batch called "Peat Monster", now a staple of the Compass Box collection. The Peat Monster owes much of its uniqueness to American cooperage expertise, where the use of new casks is a well-established tradition. To enhance this practice, a portion of this blended whisky was matured in virgin American oak casks seasoned specially made for Compass Box in Missouri, thus bringing an exclusive aromatic richness to this limited edition.
The refined blend includes: 35% Williamson malt whisky from Islay aged in American oak hogshead casks with multiple refills, 34.2% Single Malt from the Caol Ila distillery (Islay) in American hogshead casks with multiple refills, 17.9% Caol Ila Single Malt aged in ex-Bourbon casks with multiple refills, 11.8% Caol Ila Single Malt finished in ex-Port casks with multiple refills, as well as 1.1% Highland blend matured in custom French oak casks, intensely toasted to develop powerful and unique aromas.
