The prestigious Caol Ila distillery is ideally located on the island of Islay, in the heart of Scotland. Recognized as the largest Single Malt distillery on the island in terms of capacity, Caol Ila was founded in 1846 near Port Askaig and is now an integral part of the Diageo portfolio. A significant portion of its production is dedicated to the famous blends such as Johnnie Walker, which explains the complete modernization of its facilities in 1974 to meet growing demand. Since 2010, its capacity has exploded, increasing from 3.5 to 6.5 million liters per year. Until 2002, Caol Ila Single Malts were mainly available through independent bottlers before the official launch of the Caol Ila 12-year-old by the parent company. The malted barley comes from Port Ellen, and the stills, significantly larger than those of other Islay distilleries, are only half filled to optimize contact between the alcohol vapor and the copper, thus giving Caol Ila whiskies a distinctive style: Single Malts that are much less peated than other Islay productions, with a subtle, balanced, and refined smoky profile. Additionally, some rare non-peated editions are also produced, enhancing the diversity and richness of the range.
The famous Distiller’s Edition 2022 is a perfect example of Caol Ila's excellence. This Single Malt is aged for 12 years in traditional oak casks before being finished for 6 months in American oak casks that previously held sweet and aromatic Moscatel wine. This unique double maturation brings exceptional aromatic complexity, blending fruity elegance and woody notes for a whisky that is both rich and balanced.
