The Foursquare Rum Distillery (and Heritage Park) is located in the south of Barbados, an island renowned for the exceptional quality of its rums. Owned by the Seale family, this distillery benefits from a unique rum-making tradition that spans five generations since 1820. As one of the oldest trading houses in Barbados, Foursquare carries a rich heritage and expertise passionately passed down for nearly two centuries. At a time when Reginald Leon Seale, like other merchants, was prohibited by excise law from selling rum directly to consumers, he innovated by creating a distribution business in Bridgetown in the early 1900s: this is how the R. L. Seale brand was born. Between 1962 and 1993, iconic rums from ESA Field and Alleyne Arthur, including Old Brigand, Taylor's Falernum, and Doorly's, enriched the portfolio. To optimize the management of these diverse brands, ESA Field and Old Brigand focused on the local market, while Doorly's became the flagship export brand. In 1995, under the enlightened vision of Sir David Seale, the family acquired an old sugar factory whose oldest building, dating from 1636, required extensive renovation. This acquisition marked the birth of the famous Foursquare Distillery. Today, this distillery combines tradition and modernity with a three-column still to produce light rums and a modern copper pot still dedicated to more complex rums. All rums are carefully distilled from fermented molasses in small batches, usually of 112 barrels, before being tropical aged in small American white oak ex-Bourbon barrels in huge open-walled warehouses. These barrels largely come from a distillery located in Lynchburg, Tennessee, ensuring quality and optimal aging.
