Beenleigh Artisan Distillers is an iconic rum distillery located in Logan, Queensland, Australia. Founded in 1865 by the Englishmen John Davy and Francis Gooding, who acquired 300 acres along the Albert River, this distillery takes its name from the Beenleigh clearing, in tribute to their former farm in Devonshire. Initially intended for cotton cultivation, the land quickly proved ideal for growing sugarcane, offering a more profitable agricultural alternative. Licensed in 1884, the distillery specialized in producing rum from molasses derived from locally grown and crushed sugar. Although production ceased in 1969 due to declining demand, the Davy family revived operations in 1972, modernizing the facilities and diversifying production with whisky, brandy, gin, vodka, and ouzo. Despite a major flood in 1974, the distillery survived and, after being acquired by the Moran family in 1980, underwent significant redevelopment and modernization. In 1984, Tarac Industries took a majority stake, and today, the distillery combines traditional methods with modern equipment, including advanced fermentation tanks and column stills, while preserving its precious traditional copper pot still.
This 10-year-old rum is made entirely from molasses. Its distillation combines a column still for finesse and an authentic copper pot still for aromatic richness. This process gives the rum remarkable complexity and a balanced profile. It then undergoes a long and careful aging of 10 years in ex-brandy casks that impart softness and subtlety, as well as in American oak ex-bourbon barrels that infuse it with typical woody, vanilla, and spicy notes.
