El Dorado is an exceptional rum produced by the prestigious house Demerara Distillers Limited within the renowned Diamond Distillery, located in the heart of Guyana. The legendary history of rum in Guyana begins as early as the 1640s with the introduction of sugarcane by the first European settlers. Quickly, by 1670, Demerara rum production was established thanks to the setting up of distilleries in the new territories acquired by the British. In the 18th century, more than 300 distilleries thrived, each developing unique rums recognizable by their own brand of origin (SWR, ICBU, PM, EHP, LBI, AN). From the 1800s, colonial rums from British blends gained popularity, notably the first Old Vatted Demerara (OVD), mainly made from rums from the historic Port Mourant distillery. In the 20th century, faced with falling sugar prices and new taxes, the sugar and rum industry underwent significant consolidation, drastically reducing the number of active estates. By 1942, only nine distilleries had survived. Today, the El Dorado range offers a prestigious collection of aged rums, resulting from ancestral know-how. The distillery continues the tradition by still using the original production stills from the great sugar estates of the 18th and 19th centuries. Natural aging at ambient temperature, in the tropical climatic conditions of Guyana, gives these rums their unique smoothness and unparalleled aromatic depth.
