Glen Scotia - Double Cask - Campbeltown - 46%
Glen Scotia is an iconic distillery located in Campbeltown, on the picturesque Kintyre peninsula in Scotland, renowned worldwide for its exceptional whiskies. Founded in 1832 under the name Scotia, it was established by James Stewart, then mayor of Campbeltown, and John Galbraith, provost of the town, who managed the establishment until 1895. In 1919, Glen Scotia became a founding member of the West Highland Malt Distilleries consortium, grouping six local distilleries to pool costs and preserve this unique heritage in the face of economic challenges. In 1924, Duncan MacCallum, founder of Glen Nevis, acquired the distillery. Although a temporary closure in 1928 marked a difficult period, it reopened in 1930. That same year, tragically, MacCallum committed suicide after a fraud ruined his savings, and the distillery was bought by Bloch Brothers, who added "Glen" to the Scotia name. Local legend even says that MacCallum's ghost still haunts the premises, bringing mystery and history to this prestigious house. Bloch Brothers remained owners until 1954, after which Glen Scotia changed hands several times. Following a closure between 1984 and 1989, the distillery was relaunched under the impetus of Gibson International. In 1994, after the resale of Gibson's interests, Glen Catrine Bonded Warehouse Ltd temporarily paused production before Glen Scotia resumed continuous production in 1999. In 2014, the prestigious Loch Lomond group acquired the distillery, making significant investments: increasing capacity, opening new warehouses, and creating a visitor center, reviving and enhancing this legendary Scottish whisky brand.
Glen Scotia Double Cask is an exceptional whisky, carefully matured in first-fill American oak casks that impart richness in vanilla and spices, before being enhanced by a 12-month finishing in Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks bringing indulgent notes of dried fruits, ripe grapes, and a unique silky sweetness. This double maturation style, or "double cask," highlights the distillery's mastery in the art of aging, offering a perfect balance of power, complexity, and finesse.
