Ardnamurchan - AD/10.21:06 - Single Malt - Bottled in 2021 - 46.8%
The Ardnamurchan Distillery is located in the wild region of Argyll, at the extreme west of the British mainland, in the heart of the majestic Scottish Highlands. Legal distillation was unknown on the remote Ardnamurchan peninsula until the renowned independent bottler Adelphi founded this distillery in 2014, bringing new life to this preserved region. However, this is not the first distillery to bear the Adelphi name: the very first was established in the Gorbals district of Glasgow in 1826, under the direction of Archibald Walker in 1880. This traditional company was unique in its kind, producing whisky in Scotland, Ireland, and England, with production exceeding 500,000 gallons annually of malt and grain whisky in 1887. Purchased by DCL (Distillers Company Limited) in 1903, the stills were stopped in 1907 following the tragedy known as the "Great Gorbals Disaster," when the collapse of a fermentation vat caused a tidal wave of hot alcohol that resulted in the death of a man and severely disrupted the local community. Today, the former site houses Glasgow's central mosque. Archibald Walker's great-grandson, Jamie, revived the Adelphi brand in 1993 as an independent bottler. The current owners acquired the company in 2004, further enhancing its prestige.
The Ardnamurchan Distillery stands out for its deep commitment to ecological and sustainable practices. All electricity and heat required are produced from local renewable energy sources. The river supplying cooling water to the distillery is equipped with a hydroelectric generator, while the biomass boiler runs on wood from sustainably managed nearby forests. This process allows the distillery to display an extremely low carbon footprint, equal to 1. Furthermore, the residues from whisky production are fully recycled on the peninsula. The draff, still rich in nutrients, coming from the malt remaining in the mash tun, is combined with "pot ale" to produce natural feed for local livestock. Ardnamurchan's first official bottling was launched in 2016 with only 2,500 bottles released worldwide, all sold in a single night, demonstrating the strong demand and growing enthusiasm for this innovative distillery.
