The Ardnamurchan Distillery is located in Argyll, at the westernmost point of the British mainland, in the heart of the majestic Highlands of Scotland. Legal distillation was until recently unknown in this remote Ardnamurchan peninsula, until the independent bottler Adelphi opened its distillery in 2014, bringing new life to this mythical whisky land. However, this distillery is not the first to bear the Adelphi name. The original distillery, established in the iconic Gorbals district of Glasgow as early as 1826, passed into the hands of Archibald Walker in 1880. It became the only whisky producer operating in Scotland, Ireland, and England, reaching an impressive annual production of over 500,000 gallons of malt and grain whisky in 1887. Bought by the Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1903, the distillery was closed four years later following the tragedy known as the "Great Gorbals Disaster": the collapse of a fermentation vat caused a tidal wave of hot alcohol into the neighboring street, resulting in the drowning of a man and considerable damage. Today, the former site houses Glasgow's central mosque. Archibald Walker's great-grandson, Jamie Walker, revived Adelphi as an independent bottler in 1993, and the current owners took over the company in 2004.
The Ardnamurchan Distillery is a pioneer in ecological and sustainable practices. All its electricity and heat needs come exclusively from local renewable energy sources. The river that supplies the cooling water is equipped with a hydroelectric generator, while the boiler runs on biomass using wood from local forestry. This allows the distillery to maintain an extremely low carbon footprint, close to exemplary with an overall score of 1. Furthermore, all by-products of the manufacturing process are valorized on the peninsula: the draff, rich in energy, is mixed with "pot ale" to produce nutritious feed for local livestock. Launched in 2016, the first bottling of this unique distillation was a real success, with only 2,500 bottles available worldwide that sold out in a single night.
