Ardnamurchan - AD 2019 - First Fill Sherry Single Cask - Edition No. 4 - 57.4%
The Ardnamurchan Distillery is nestled in Argyll, at the westernmost point of the British mainland, in the majestic Highlands of Scotland. Legal distillation was previously unknown here until the renowned independent bottler Adelphi inaugurated its distillery in 2014. However, this is not the first distillery associated with Adelphi. The original was built in 1826 in the Gorbals district of Glasgow, before passing into the hands of Archibald Walker in 1880, making Adelphi the only distiller to produce whisky in Scotland, Ireland, and England. By 1887, it produced over 500,000 gallons of malt and grain whisky annually. Purchased by DCL (Distillers Company Limited) in 1903, its stills were stopped in 1907 following the tragedy known as the "Great Gorbals Disaster." A fermentation vat collapsed, causing a tidal wave of hot alcohol into a nearby street, resulting in the drowning of a man and many injuries. The site is now occupied by Glasgow's central mosque. Jamie Walker, great-grandson of Archibald, relaunched Adelphi as an independent bottler in 1993, with a new acquisition of the company by its current owners in 2004.
The Ardnamurchan Distillery embodies a strong commitment to ecological and sustainable principles: all electricity and heat required for its operation come from local renewable energies. The river used for the cooling system is equipped with a hydroelectric generator, while the biomass boiler is fueled by wood from local forestry. Its overall carbon footprint is particularly low, rated at 1. Furthermore, the residues from the whisky production process are fully recycled on the peninsula. The draff, still rich in energy contained in the mash tun, is mixed with the "pot ale" to produce feed for local livestock. Ardnamurchan's first bottling was launched in 2016; with only 2,500 bottles available worldwide, it sold out in a single night.
AD 2019 Edition No. 4 was matured exclusively in first fill sherry casks, harmoniously blending the Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez grape varieties, offering complex and intense notes.
