ARDBEG - Perpetuum - Bicentennial Edition of the Distillery 2015 - 47.40% ABV
Ardbeg is a prestigious distillery located on the iconic island of Islay, in the heart of the renowned Scottish region famous for its exceptional whiskies. Recognized as one of the oldest and most influential distilleries on Islay, Ardbeg stands out for its intensely peated whiskies, offering a unique tasting experience to enthusiasts worldwide. A pioneer in innovation, Ardbeg made history by becoming the first whisky to travel into space: in 2011, part of its production was sent to the International Space Station to study the impact of weightlessness on aging and aromas, a revolutionary initiative that further enhanced its international reputation.
Distillation on this site dates back to 1798, with commercial sales beginning in 1815—the same year as its iconic neighbor Laphroaig. Ardbeg quickly won a broad audience, its whisky highly prized for the creation of prestigious blends. However, from 1838, the distillery went through a turbulent period with changes in ownership and financial difficulties, leading to its closure in 1981. After a partial reopening in 1989, limited to two months of activity per year, it was in 1997 that Ardbeg regained full strength thanks to its acquisition by the Glenmorangie group, a subsidiary of the French luxury giant LVMH, which enabled it to resume continuous and ambitious production.
Ardbeg's two traditional stills produce nearly one million liters of pure alcohol annually, exclusively marketed as Single Malt. The whisky is primarily aged in Bourbon casks, complemented by subtle maturation in Sherry casks that enrich its flavors. Ardbeg is characterized by pronounced peat but distinguishes itself from many other Islay whiskies by its aromatic balance between smoky, spicy notes and an underlying sweetness, without the strictly maritime aspect often encountered.
Ardbeg Perpetuum is a special edition created to celebrate the bicentennial of the distillery, marked on May 30, 2015. This exceptional whisky is the result of a blend of several Ardbeg vintages, meticulously matured in Bourbon and Sherry casks for over ten years, ensuring a complex aromatic richness and remarkable longevity on the palate.
