LEDAIG - 22 years old - Vintage 1999 - Pedro Ximenez cask maturation - 55.6%
The Tobermory Distillery is nestled in the heart of the Isle of Mull, a picturesque island located off the west coast of Scotland. Founded in 1798, it is known as the only active whisky distillery on the Isle of Mull and one of the oldest commercial Scottish distilleries still in operation. In 1797, John Sinclair, a local merchant specializing in kelp seaweed, applied for a lease of 57 acres in the area called Ledaig with the intention of building housing and a distillery. His request was initially denied, granting him only permission to erect a brewery. Determined, he pursued his project and a year later, the Ledaig distillery finally came into existence. During the 1930s, the distillery faced a difficult period due to the Great Depression and the American Prohibition, which caused a sharp collapse in whisky demand, leading to a 41-year closure. It was only in 1993, after its acquisition by Burn Stewart Distillers, that the distillery reopened. Since 2013, it has been part of the renowned Distell group. The Tobermory distillery also produces the famous Tobermory Gin and two Single Malts with distinct profiles: a non-peated Tobermory and an intensely peated Ledaig. Although both whiskies are made using the same stills, mash tuns, washbacks, and the same pure water source, their character is radically different thanks to the specific choice of malted barley used for each expression. These differences highlight the richness and diversity of whiskies from the same distillery.
This splendid vintage of Ledaig, distilled in 1999, has benefited from an exceptional maturation of 22 years in carefully selected Pedro Ximenez Sherry casks, known for imparting delightfully sweet and complex notes to the whisky while enhancing its aromatic richness.
