TOBERMORY - 17 years old - Vintage 2004 - Oloroso Cask - 55.9%
The Tobermory Distillery is ideally located on the Isle of Mull, off the picturesque west coast of Scotland. Founded in 1798, it remains the only whisky distillery on this wild and preserved island, and one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland still in operation. In 1797, John Sinclair, a local entrepreneur specializing in selling kelp seaweed, applied for a 57-acre lease at Ledaig to establish housing and a distillery. His request was initially denied, allowing him only to build a brewery. Persevering, John Sinclair realized his project a year later with the creation of the Ledaig distillery. During the 1930s, the Great Depression coupled with the American Prohibition caused a drastic drop in whisky demand, leading to a prolonged closure of 41 years. It was only in 1993, after its acquisition by Burn Stewart Distillers, that the distillery reopened. Since 2013, it has been an integral part of the Distell group. Today, the distillery produces the renowned Tobermory Gin as well as two unique Single Malts: a non-peated Tobermory and a heavily peated Ledaig. Although they share the same stills, fermentation vessels (washbacks), mash tuns, and pure local water sources, these whiskies express radically different aromatic profiles, mainly thanks to the diversity of malted barley used.
This rare expression of Tobermory offers an exceptional aging of 17 years, distilled in 2004 and matured exclusively in Oloroso Sherry casks. This prestigious limited edition saw the production of only 11,124 bottles, making this single malt a treasure for collectors and fine whisky enthusiasts.
