Gordon & MacPhail is a renowned independent bottler of Scottish whisky and owner of the prestigious Benromach distillery. Known for its wide range of exclusive bottlings from Scotland's most iconic distilleries, this family business has preserved a unique expertise for over 125 years. Founded in 1895 in Elgin, northeast Scotland, initially as a grocery and wine and spirits merchant, the company saw its former apprentice, John Urquhart, take full control in 1915. Today, Gordon & MacPhail embodies excellence in the world of single malts and rare whiskies.
The Caol Ila distillery, a true icon located on the island of Islay in Scotland, is the largest Single Malt distillery on the island in terms of production capacity. Founded in 1846 near Port Askaig, it is now part of the giant Diageo portfolio. Its production is largely dedicated to prestigious blends, notably Johnnie Walker. The modern distillery replaced the old facility in 1974 to increase capacity, which has nearly doubled since 2010, rising from 3.5 to 6.5 million liters annually. Before 2002, Caol Ila Single Malts were only available through independent bottlers; that year marked the official release of the 12-year-old Caol Ila. Malted barley from Port Ellen, combined with the use of larger stills filled halfway, allows greater contact between alcohol vapor and copper, giving Caol Ila whiskies a generally less peaty profile than other Islay malts, with a subtle smoky character that appeals to connoisseurs. The distillery also occasionally offers non-peated expressions, broadening its aromatic range.
This incredible edition was aged for 20 years in a first-fill Sherry cask, Single Cask No. 309563, ensuring remarkable richness and complexity in this unique whisky. Bottled on May 28, 2021, this gem produced only 612 bottles, making it a highly sought-after rarity among enthusiasts and collectors.
