Habitation Clément is ideally located in François, Martinique, the heart of the production of the prestigious agricultural rum. Founded by Homère Clément in 1887, during a major sugar crisis, this distillery draws its excellence from a rich and passionate history. At that time, Homère Clément, an iconic figure and respected mayor of François, acquired the renowned Domaine de l’Acajou, a 43-acre estate among the best sugarcane plantations on the island. Despite the economic collapse of the sugar sector, he revolutionized local production by transforming this sugar plantation into one of the most prestigious producers of Agricultural Rum in the world. His major innovation was to cultivate his sugarcane to press an exquisite aromatic juice, intended for a first pressing, source of a pure and flavorful rum. Inspired by the great know-how of French eaux-de-vie, notably those discovered during his studies in Paris, Homère adapted the techniques of Armagnac distillers to create what we now know as Agricultural Rum. After the death of Charles Clément, his son, the house was managed by George-Louis and Jean-José Clément before being integrated into the GBH group in 1986, which remains the owner. The original distillery is now a museum, while the distillation of Clément rum continues at the Distillerie du Simon, near François, with careful aging in the Clément cellars.
This limited edition of only 750 bottles is the result of an unprecedented partnership between La Confrérie du Rhum, the Québec Rhum club, and the emblematic cellar masters of the Clément house, Robert Perronet and Julien Thimon. This unique cuvée marks a first in the history of Habitation Clément as it is a 45-month-old barrel proof rum, aged in a barrel with a very heavily toasted wood char, giving the rum exceptionally rich and complex aromas, highly sought after by enthusiasts and connoisseurs of premium spirits.
