In 1862, a French entrepreneur named Dupré Barbancourt, originally from the famous Cognac region, settled on the island to found the prestigious Barbancourt distillery. Drawing on his expertise in the art of cognac, he introduced the traditional double distillation method to craft his exceptional agricole rums. For several decades, production remained entirely artisanal, until Jean Gardère, in the 1940s, gave new momentum to the company by significantly expanding its capacity and reputation. Located in the heart of the Cul-de-sac plain, amidst vast sugarcane fields, the Barbancourt distillery has remained in the same family since its creation. Today, it is the most renowned in Haiti and enjoys international recognition confirmed by numerous awards each year.
