Ron Abuelo is a prestigious artisanal rum distillery located in the heart of Panama, globally recognized for the exceptional quality of its aged rums. A symbol of a family heritage passed down through three generations, Ron Abuelo pays vibrant tribute to Don José Varela Blanco, a pioneer who left Spain in 1908 to found the first sugarcane plantation in Panama. The first bottle of Abuelo rum was produced in 1936, marking the beginning of a unique tradition of excellence. This noble house rigorously masters every step of its production, from the meticulous harvesting of sugarcane to bottling, exclusively done on-site to guarantee optimal quality.
The production process of Ron Abuelo begins with the creation of an ultra-concentrated base syrup called "miel de caña," extracted from freshly pressed sugarcane juice. Then, pure water from private wells and specially cultivated local yeasts are added to initiate a natural and controlled fermentation. Distillation takes place in a unique column still, ensuring unmatched purity and aromatic richness. The young rum is then patiently aged in small ex-Bourbon oak barrels, allowing subtle refinement. The rarest varieties benefit from aging using the Solera method, a traditional process that imparts complexity and balance. After several years of maturation, barrels are rigorously selected to be blended into a harmonious batch transferred into a single barrel, where the rum reaches an optimal strength of about 65%. Finally, carefully dosed demineralized water and a touch of natural sugar perfect the balance, offering an exquisite, round, and velvety tasting experience.
