Hampden - 8 years old - 2012 - OWH Single Cask #667 Paris Edition - 61.70%
Hampden Estate is one of the oldest iconic sugar plantations in Jamaica, with a history dating back to 1753 under the ownership of Mr. Archibald Stirling of Scotland. In 1779, Mr. Stirling built the splendid Hampden Great House, whose ground floor served as a rum warehouse until the early 20th century. The Farquarson family managed the sugar plantation and rum production until 2003, the year when the Jamaica Sugar Company took over the estate. Renowned for having some of the most fertile lands in Jamaica, the plantation produces an exceptional yield of sugarcane. Historically, Hampden rums were exported exclusively to Europe, especially England and Scotland. In 2009, Everglades Farms Ltd, owned by the Hussey family, acquired the property through a public offer as part of the Jamaican government's divestment. Since then, Everglades Farms has made significant investments in manufacturing, created jobs in Trelawny, and provided essential infrastructure support to more than 17 surrounding communities and schools.
The water used for producing these exceptional rums does not come from underground aquifers but is captured through a unique mountain water collection system specific to the estate. This water is then returned to nature, perfectly purified, thus respecting the strictest environmental standards. The long and natural fermentation is ensured thanks to indigenous yeasts that give the rum its unique character. Hampden Estate remains one of the few distilleries still using traditional batch distillation, with four stills in operation. The oldest, a John Dore dating from 1960, has a capacity of 7,560 liters. Aging takes place under the intense Jamaican tropical climate which, equivalently, gives an age of more than 25 years compared to European climates. All Hampden rums are aged, refined, and bottled without additives – no sugar, tannin, caramel, or glycerin is added, thus guaranteeing authentic and natural purity.
This 8-year-old Hampden rum comes from the prestigious Trelawny Endemic Birds series, gathering the first single cask raw barrel editions bottled directly by Hampden Distillery. It comes from Cask #667, identified as OWH (Overproof Hampden), indicating ester levels between 40 and 80 grams per hectoliter, offering an intense and characteristic aromatic complexity. Initially selected as an exclusive bottling for Whisky Live Paris in September 2020, this edition was unfortunately canceled due to the Covid-19 health crisis, making this bottle a rare and sought-after piece by connoisseurs.
