Hampden - 8 years old - Two Glass Set - 46% ABV
Hampden Estate is one of the oldest and most prestigious sugar plantations in Jamaica, founded in 1753 under the ownership of Mr. Archibald Stirling from Scotland. In 1779, Mr. Stirling built the famous Hampden Great House, whose ground floor served as a rum warehouse until the early 1900s. For over two centuries, the Farquarson family upheld the tradition by producing sugar and rum until 2003, when the estate was transferred to the Jamaica Sugar Company. This historic estate is recognized for having the richest sugarcane lands in Jamaica, ensuring optimal quality through massive sugar production from carefully milled cane. At the time, Hampden rums were exclusively reserved for export to Europe, notably England and Scotland. In 2009, Everglades Farms Ltd, owned by the Hussey family, took over the estate through a public offer following the divestment of Jamaica Sugar Company's assets, then managed by the Jamaican government. Since this acquisition, Everglades Farms has invested heavily in the distillery, creating many jobs in Trelawny and supporting over 17 communities and schools with sustainable infrastructure.
The authenticity of Hampden rums also rests on their ecological approach. The water used in the production process does not come from underground aquifers but from their own mountain water collection system, thus ensuring a sustainable and local resource. This water, once used, returns pure to its natural environment, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainable development. Fermentation, essential for aromatic richness, is carried out using natural yeasts that extend this process. Hampden Estate is one of the last distilleries in the world to practice batch distillation (pot still), currently operating with four traditional stills, the oldest being a 1960 John Dore with an impressive capacity of 7,560 liters. Aging is done exclusively in the Jamaican tropical climate (tropical aging) for over 7 years, equivalent to about 25 years of maturation in Europe, guaranteeing exceptional aromatic intensity. All Hampden rums are produced, aged, and bottled without any additives: no added sugar, tannins, caramel, or glycerin are included, thus respecting the original purity of the product.
This molasses rum of 8 years old, a true OWH (Outram W Hussey), shows a particularly high ester content, ranging between 40 and 80 grams per hectoliter, a guarantee of remarkable aromatic complexity. It is presented in an elegant exclusive "book" box set, including two high-quality glasses by Riedel, perfect for revealing the subtleties of this exceptional rum.
