BUNNAHABHAIN - 25 years - 46.3% ABV
Bunnahabhain is an iconic whisky distillery located on the Isle of Islay (pronounced "Ayla") in Scotland, known for its unique and refined whiskies. Unlike the majority of Islay whiskies, Bunnahabhain whiskies are distinguished by their soft, non-peated, and lightly smoky character, offering a subtle alternative to the classic Islay profiles.
Founded in 1881 by William Robertson in collaboration with William and James Greenlees, the Bunnahabhain distillery has endured through the ages while maintaining its authenticity. From 1883, production increased, and due to the growing popularity of Scottish whiskies in the 1960s, the number of stills was doubled in 1963. After a difficult period in the early 1980s that led to a temporary suspension in 1982, the distillery resumed operations in 1984. Since then, it has undergone several ownership changes before being integrated into the Distell group in 2013, thereby strengthening its presence in the global market.
The artisanal process of making Bunnahabhain whisky begins with the use of lightly peated malted barley, carefully selected, which is malted with pure spring water from "Margadale." This naturally soft and mineral-rich water is heated in the mash tun to create the wort. Fermentation takes place in Oregon pine vats, promoting the development of complex and natural aromas. An essential point to highlight is that none of the single malt Scotch whiskies produced by Bunnahabhain are chill-filtered, thus ensuring preserved flavor richness and an optimal sensory experience.
