Bielle is an iconic distillery located on the paradisiacal island of Marie-Galante, also known as the island of 100 mills, renowned for its exceptional terroir and traditional expertise. The history of Bielle dates back to 1769, when Jean-Pierre Bielle initially cultivated coffee there. In 1826, his sons founded a 53-hectare refinery-sugar factory, marking the beginning of a remarkable agricultural adventure. The production of agricultural rum on the estate began at the beginning of the 20th century, with the property changing hands several times. In 1935, Félix Bicoto built the main house, a symbol of local heritage. After World War II, the property was abandoned until 1956, when Paul Rameaux became the owner. However, it was under the impetus of his great-nephew Dominique Thierry, a passionate engineer, that the Société d’Exploitation de la Distillerie Bielle (S.E.D.B.) regained its momentum. In forty years, the distillery rose to become one of the most prestigious and renowned in the French Antilles.
The sugarcane used for the production of this rum comes both from the estate and from small local producers, some of whom still uphold ancestral traditions by using the cabrouet (ox cart) to transport the canes. At the distillery, two modern mills carefully extract the cane juice, which ferments for 48 hours to fully develop its natural aromas before being meticulously distilled in three stainless steel Savalle columns. The rum can then be bottled at the historic strength of 59°, or aged in cellars to refine its flavors.
