BIELLE - Aged Rum - Vintage 2001 - Cask 98 - 55.40 %
Bielle is an iconic distillery located on the paradisiacal island of Marie-Galante, also evocatively known as the "island of 100 mills." Bielle's rich history begins in 1769, when Jean-Pierre Bielle initially cultivated coffee there. His sons later partnered in 1826 to found a refinery-sugar factory covering 53 hectares. The production of prestigious agricultural rum on this estate started at the beginning of the 20th century. Over the decades, the property changed hands several times: in 1935, Félix Bicoto built the current main house. After World War II, the distillery was abandoned until it was bought in 1956 by Paul Rameaux. However, it was only when in 1970 his grandnephew, Dominique Thierry, a young visionary engineer, took over the management of the Société d’Exploitation de la Distillerie Bielle (S.E.D.B.) that the distillery entered a new era. In forty years, Bielle became one of the most recognized and respected distilleries in the Antilles.
The sugarcane, cultivated on the estate and by passionate local small producers, is harvested using traditional methods, some still using the cabrouet, a typical ox cart for transporting cane. On site, two ancestral mills press the cane to extract a natural juice, fermented for 48 hours before being expertly distilled in three ultra-efficient stainless steel Savalle columns. The rums from this distillation are then bottled at the historic strength of 59°, or carefully aged in the cellars, benefiting from the unique tropical climate of Marie-Galante which gives the spirits an exceptional character.
This Bielle 2001 full proof (cask strength, uncut) comes from the exceptional cask number 98. Bottled at its natural strength, this vintage agricultural rum aged 14 years in former bourbon barrels, enhanced by the tropical climatic conditions that favor slow and harmonious maturation. Cask 98 stands out with its powerful alcohol content at 55.40%, offering an intense, complex, and generous aromatic palette. This rare edition, limited to only 108 bottles, will delight lovers of exceptional and collectible rums.
