CHARTREUSE - Yellow Cuvée des MOF - Best Craftsmen of France Sommeliers - 2025 Bottling - 45% ABV
The Order of the Chartreuse had existed for over 500 years when, in 1605, at a Chartreuse monastery located in Vauvert, a small suburb of Paris, the monks received a precious gift from Duke François Hannibal d'Estrées: an ancient manuscript revealing the secret recipe of an "Elixir," nicknamed "Elixir of Long Life." This manuscript, probably the work of a 16th-century alchemist, demonstrates a profound knowledge of medicinal plants and a unique expertise in assembling, infusing, and macerating more than 130 herbs to create a perfectly balanced and revitalizing tonic. Due to the recipe's extreme complexity, only fragments were understood and used at Vauvert. At the beginning of the 18th century, this precious manuscript was sent to the Order's Mother House, La Grande Chartreuse, nestled in the mountains near Grenoble. The monastery's apothecary, Brother Jérôme Maubec, then succeeded in unraveling this mystery and wrote in 1737 the practical formula allowing the manufacture of this Elixir, whose official production dates back to 1764. The Chartreuse distillery was nationalized in 1903 by the French government, forcing the monks to temporarily leave the premises. Upon bankruptcy in 1929, they recovered the Chartreuse brand and resumed authentic production of the famous liqueurs within a distillery established in 1860 at Fourvoirie, not far from the Monastery. In 1935, following a landslide that almost destroyed Fourvoirie, production was transferred to Voiron, where it continues to this day.
The meticulous process of selecting, grinding, and blending the secret herbs as well as the medicinal plants used in the liqueurs' creation is carried out within the monastery itself by two monks dedicated to this ancestral task. These unique ingredients are then transported to Voiron, where they macerate in rigorously selected alcohol before being carefully distilled. Maturation finally takes place in large oak barrels, stored in the most renowned aging cellar in the world for the exceptional length of its aging periods, guaranteeing rich, deep, and highly complex aromas.
The result of a prestigious collaboration with the Best Craftsmen of France sommeliers, this special Yellow cuvée, created in 2007, offers an elegant and refined reinterpretation of the famous Chartreuse liqueur. This enhanced version finely combines the emblematic characteristics of the Yellow: a liqueur both distinctive and accessible, blending softness and liveliness, freshness and power, aromatic complexity and perfect balance, thus offering an exceptional sensory experience.
