Ardnamurchan - 10 years - 50%
The Ardnamurchan Distillery is a true gem of the Scottish Highlands, located in Argyll, at the westernmost point of the British mainland, in a still preserved and wild region. Until 2014, legal distillation was unknown in this remote peninsula, until the independent bottler Ardnamurchan established its distillery there. It directly carries the vision of Adelphi, an iconic independent bottler from the city of Glasgow. Adelphi's story begins in 1826 in the Gorbals district, where a distillery was built before passing into the hands of Archibald Walker in 1880, a pioneer of whisky in Scotland, Ireland, and England. By 1887, the company was already producing over 500,000 gallons annually of malt and grain whisky. After its acquisition by DCL (Distillers Company Limited) in 1903, distillation ceased in 1907 due to the infamous "Great Gorbals Disaster": the collapse of a fermentation vat caused a tidal wave of hot whisky resulting in human casualties. Today, the site houses Glasgow's central mosque. This rich heritage was revived in 1993 when Jamie Walker, Archibald's great-grandson, relaunched Adelphi as an independent bottler, which was bought in 2004 by its current owners.
Today, Ardnamurchan distillery is a flagship example of ecological and sustainable commitment. It operates entirely on renewable energies: electricity and heat production come exclusively from local and clean resources. A hydroelectric generator installed on the river supplying the distillery ensures a constant green energy supply, while the biomass boiler uses wood from responsible local forestry. Thanks to these efforts, the distillery's overall carbon footprint is exceptionally low. Furthermore, Ardnamurchan values every aspect of production. By-products, such as energy-rich draff and "pot ale," are locally recycled as nutritious feed for the peninsula's livestock, thus closing the ecological cycle. After years of work, the very first Ardnamurchan bottling was released in 2016, with only 2,500 bottles available worldwide, an immediate success sold out in one night.
In 2024, Ardnamurchan distillery proudly celebrated its ten-year anniversary. To mark this major milestone, a unique batch was unveiled: the Ardnamurchan 10 years. This exceptional single malt reveals all the mastery and passion of modern Scottish distillation. Initially aged in first-fill Bourbon casks, it benefits from an exclusive finishing of over a year in barrels that contained the prestigious Paul Launois Champagne, thus bringing a rare aromatic complexity with fine and elegant notes. This perfect marriage between Highland tradition and innovation gives this whisky a unique, subtle, and unforgettable character.
