Hampden - Vintage 2023 - C<>H - Ex-Peated Whisky - Single Cask #775 - Foundations - 64.1%
Hampden Estate is one of the oldest and most prestigious sugar plantations in Jamaica, with a rich history dating back to 1753, when the estate belonged to Mr. Archibald Stirling of Scotland. In 1779, Mr. Stirling built the Hampden Great House, whose ground floor was used as a rum warehouse until the early 1900s. The Farquarson family operated the estate, specializing in sugar and rum production, until 2003, when the property was transferred to the Jamaica Sugar Company. Renowned for having the most fertile sugarcane lands in Jamaica, this plantation produces the largest volume of sugar from crushed cane in the region. Historically, Hampden rums were exclusively exported to Europe, notably England and Scotland. In 2009, Everglades Farms Ltd, owned by the Hussey family, purchased the estate during a divestment operation by the Jamaica Sugar Company, a government-owned company. Since this acquisition, Everglades Farms has invested significantly in the distillery, creating many jobs in the town of Trelawny and providing substantial support to over 17 local communities and schools.
The water used in rum production comes from an exclusive mountain water collection system, ensuring pure and sustainable quality, unlike traditional underground aquifers. After use, the water is fully purified, respecting the local environment and promoting a virtuous ecological cycle. Fermentation is closely controlled and prolonged through the use of native natural yeasts, giving the rums a unique authenticity and aromatic complexity. Hampden Estate remains one of the few distilleries in the world still using traditional discontinuous distillation, with a set of four operational stills, the oldest being a 1960 John Dore with a capacity of 7,560 liters. Aging takes place under optimal tropical conditions: the rums mature for over 7 years in Jamaica's warm and humid climate, equivalent to about 25 years of aging in European temperate climates. True to its artisanal philosophy, Hampden produces, ages, and bottles its rums without any additives or added sugar, guaranteeing authentic purity without caramel, tannins, or glycerin.
