CHARTREUSE - Yellow Cuvée of the MOF - Best Craftsmen of France Sommeliers - Jeroboam Format - 2023 Bottling - 45% ABV
The Order of the Chartreuse already had a rich tradition spanning over 500 years when, in 1605, at a Chartreuse monastery in Vauvert, a small suburb of Paris, the monks received a precious gift from Duke François Hannibal d'Estrées: an ancient manuscript revealing the recipe for an "Elixir" nicknamed the "Elixir of Long Life." This precious manuscript, attributed to a 16th-century alchemist, demonstrated profound knowledge of herbs as well as exceptional mastery in the art of extracting, infusing, and macerating more than 130 medicinal plants to create a powerful and balanced tonic. The complexity of this original recipe only allowed partial understanding and use of certain extracts at Vauvert. It was not until the early 18th century that the manuscript was entrusted to the Mother House of the Order, La Grande Chartreuse, nestled in the mountains near Grenoble. The monastery's pharmacist, Brother Jérôme Maubec, finally managed to unlock the secrets of this formula, and in 1737, documented the practical method of preparing the Elixir, completed in 1764. In 1903, during the nationalization of the distillery by the French government, the monks were expelled. Following the 1929 bankruptcy, they regained the Chartreuse brand and returned to their historic distillery, established since 1860 in Fourvoirie, near the monastery, to resume authentic production of Chartreuse liqueurs. In 1935, after a landslide partially destroyed Fourvoirie, production was transferred to Voiron, where it continues today with passion.
The rigorous selection, meticulous grinding, and precise blending of the secret herbs, plants, and other medicinal botanicals used in the production of the liqueurs are carried out directly in the monastery by two expert monks. Once assembled, these precious ingredients are transported to Voiron, where they undergo delicate maceration in high-quality alcohol followed by controlled distillation. These unique liqueurs then age for several years in immense oak barrels, submerged in the world's longest and most prestigious maturation cellar, ensuring unmatched aromatic richness and complexity.
Born from an exceptional collaboration with the Best Craftsmen of France Sommeliers, the story of this exceptional cuvée of the famous Chartreuse liqueur dates back to 2007.
