Lochlea - Ploughing Edition - 46%
The Lochlea Distillery is located in Kilmarnock, in the prestigious county of Ayrshire, in the heart of the Scottish Lowlands. Founded on historically rich lands, this distillery incorporates a unique cultural heritage as it was once a cattle farm owned by the family of Robert Burns, the Scottish national poet, who lived and worked there between 1777 and 1784. Traditionally, the barley grown on these lands was used to feed livestock; today, it is carefully cultivated to produce an exceptional whisky, faithful to ancestral methods.
The current owner, Neil McGeoch, transformed this historic site into a state-of-the-art distillery after obtaining a building permit in 2014. The following six years were dedicated to converting the farm buildings, culminating in the distillery's commissioning in August 2018. Initially under the direction of master distiller Malcolm Rennie, and now led by John Campbell, former renowned director of the Laphroaig distillery, Lochlea distillery embodies a perfect balance between innovation and tradition.
Barley is the cornerstone of Lochlea production: grown exclusively in fields located less than 150 meters from the farm, it requires 5 to 6 months of maturation. This exceptional proximity ensures impeccable quality, with raw material exclusively reserved for creating unique whiskies.
Lochlea's seasonal editions reveal the evolving and multifaceted character of the whisky produced, with four distinct expressions each year. The Lochlea Ploughing Edition is the fourth installment in this annual limited series, following Lochlea Sowing Edition, Lochlea Harvest, and Lochlea Fallow. This edition is directly inspired by the ploughing of the soil, an essential step before the spring sowing of barley.
For this exceptional whisky, meticulous aging is carried out in a unique blend of old Islay casks and peated quarter casks, bringing aromatic richness and gustatory depth. The icy blue label symbolizes the harsh and frosty winters of Ayrshire, giving an elegant visual identity evocative of the original terroirs.
