The Glenturret - 25 years - 42.2% ABV
The Glenturret Distillery, now known as Clos des Spiritueux, is located in Crieff, in the heart of the Highlands of Scotland. Officially founded in 1763 by Sir Patrick Murray of Ochtertyre, it originates from illicit distillers active as early as 1717, seeking to evade taxes. This rich history gives it the reputation of being the oldest Scottish distillery, a title contested by other traditional heirs such as Littlemill or Strathisla. In 1814, the Murray family sold the "Thurot" distillery to Thomas MacInnes, who renamed it "The Hosh Distillery." In 1825, John and Hugh Drummond, local distillers and merchants, signed the Ochtertyre Agreement, allowing them to use the crystal-clear water of Loch Turret as well as the surrounding peat in the production process. Taken over by John McCallum in 1845, then by Thomas Stewart in 1875 who definitively named it Glenturret for its centenary, this emblematic distillery endured the turmoil of wars and prohibitions, notably World War I, the Great Depression, and American Prohibition. After a prolonged closure, production resumed in 1957 under the direction of James Fairlie, before changing hands several times: Cointreau group in 1981, Highland Distillers in 1990, Edrington group in 1999, and more recently Lalique in 2018. In September 2020, after more than 250 years of history, Clos des Spiritueux offers a renewed range crafted by the highly reputed master distiller Bob Dalgarno, recognized for his exceptional expertise.
The 2022 edition of the 25-year-old is a limited expression, carefully blended from only three unique casks, each offering a distinct aromatic profile. These casks were aged for a quarter of a century in the famous Dunnage warehouses, namely two European oak Butts and one refill Hogshead, ensuring exceptional complexity and depth in this outstanding whisky.
