Adelphi - Guyana Rum - Diamond 19 years old - Vintage 2002 - Bottled in 2021 - 57.5% ABV
Adelphi Selection is a renowned independent distiller and bottler based in Argyllshire and Fife, at the heart of the prestigious Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1825, Adelphi's roots lie in the creation of the famous Adelphi Distillery, located in the historic Gorbals district of Glasgow. Brothers Charles and David Gray founded this iconic brand, later renaming the distillery Loch Katrine Adelphi after the installation of a major pipeline bringing pure water from Loch Katrine to Glasgow. A decade later, ownership passed to A Walker & Co, holders of major distilleries in Liverpool and the Irish city of Limerick. In 1903, the distillery was purchased by DCL (Distillers Company Limited), but its stills ceased operation four years later due to the tragedy known as the "Great Gorbals Disaster." During this accident, a fermentation vat collapsed, releasing a tidal wave of hot alcohol that caused significant damage, drowning a man and endangering many lives. The name Adelphi Distillery Ltd was revived in 1993 under the leadership of Jamie Walker, great-grandson of former owner Archibald Walker. He steered Adelphi as an independent bottling company before selling it to Keith Falconer and Donald Houston in 2004.
Specializing in exceptional Single Cask bottlings, the company offers whiskies and rums that are non-chill filtered and free of added coloring, ensuring optimal authenticity and purity. Each year, about 50 unique casks are selected for bottling, including the "Fascadale" range which features small batch releases from often unspecified island distilleries of varying ages. Since 2014, Adelphi has also been a producer with its own Ardnamurchan Distillery, a pioneer in artisanal and sustainable production.
The brand uses the famous "Dancey Man" drawing, a mid-19th century animated illustration depicting Sir William Gladstone performing a lively dance step on a barley ear. This historic symbol celebrates the adoption of a fundamental law that mandated taxes be calculated only on the amount of whisky remaining in the cask after maturation, not on the initial volume filled, thus revolutionizing the whisky industry.
This 19-year-old aged rum comes from the prestigious Diamond Distillery in French Guiana. Distilled in 2002, it underwent meticulous aging in a single cask No. 119 before being bottled in 2021 by Adelphi at its natural cask strength, without filtration or added coloring. This exceptional limited edition is available in only 201 bottles, offering rum enthusiasts a rare and authentic product known for its aromatic richness and unique character.
