Adelphi - Private Stock - Blended - Dancey Man - 40%
Adelphi Selection is an exceptional independent distiller and bottler located in Argyllshire and Fife, in the heart of the prestigious Scottish Highlands. This iconic house traces its roots back to 1825 with the creation of the Adelphi distillery, situated in the historic Gorbals district of Glasgow. Founded by brothers Charles and David Gray, Adelphi quickly became synonymous with quality and authenticity. It later changed its name to Loch Katrine Adelphi, in tribute to the vast pipeline designed to carry pure water from Loch Katrine to Glasgow. A decade later, ownership passed to A Walker & Co, a major player owning significant distilleries in Liverpool and Limerick. In 1903, Adelphi was acquired by DCL (Distillers Company Limited), but its stills stopped in 1907 following the memorable tragedy of the "Great Gorbals Disaster": a fermentation vessel gave way, causing a flood of hot alcohol in the street, resulting in one death and many injuries. In 1993, under the impetus of Jamie Walker, great-grandson of Archibald Walker, the legacy was revived with the creation of Adelphi Distillery Ltd as an independent bottling company. This adventure continued with the ambitions of Keith Falconer and Donald Houston, who took the reins in 2004, strengthening Adelphi's unique reputation.
Specializing in rare and prestigious Single Cask bottlings, Adelphi offers whiskies without chill filtration or added coloring, to preserve their purity and aromatic intensity. Each year, about 50 exclusive casks are bottled. The name "Fascadale" illustrates a range of small batches from confidential island distilleries, revealing exceptional whiskies at various ages. In parallel, Adelphi is now a distiller and bottler with its own Ardnamurchan Distillery, inaugurated in 2014, symbolizing contemporary craftsmanship and authenticity.
The Adelphi bottle features the famous drawing of the "Dancey Man", a historic animated illustration dating from the mid-19th century. This image depicts Sir William Gladstone performing an energetic dance step on a barley ear, celebrating the adoption of an innovative law imposing taxation based on the volume of whisky remaining in the cask after maturation, rather than at its initial filling.
Adelphi Private Stock is a skillfully crafted blend of carefully aged malt and grain whiskies, highlighting the richness of the Highlands and Scottish islands. This iconic recipe, selected by Charles MacLean and James Walker in 1993, was created to meet the wish of the original owner's grandmother, who desired an "everyday whisky" both accessible and refined.
