Adelphi Selection is a prestigious independent distiller and bottler, established in Argyllshire and Fife, in the heart of the Scottish Highlands. Founded in 1825 with the historic opening of the Adelphi distillery in the iconic Gorbals district of Glasgow, the company draws on a rich Scottish heritage. The brothers Charles and David Gray gave their name to this distillery before it became Loch Katrine Adelphi, in tribute to the creation of an innovative pipeline system transporting pure water from Loch Katrine to Glasgow. A decade later, the operation passed into the hands of A Walker & Co, a major player owning renowned distilleries in Liverpool and Limerick. In 1903, it was acquired by DCL (Distillers Company Limited), but its stills were unfortunately stopped in 1907 following the dramatic "Great Gorbals Disaster." This tragic incident saw the collapse of a fermentation vat, causing a flood of hot alcohol into the nearby street, resulting in the loss of one man and many scares for the residents. The name Adelphi Distillery Ltd was brilliantly revived in 1993 by Jamie Walker, great-grandson of Archibald Walker, the former owner, who transformed the company into an exceptional independent bottler. In 2004, management was taken over by Keith Falconer and Donald Houston, who continued this tradition of excellence.
Specializing in high-quality Single Cask bottlings, Adelphi offers its whiskies without chill filtration or added coloring additives, guaranteeing purity and authentic character. Each year, about 50 unique casks are bottled, some under the name "Fascadale," dedicated to limited editions from confidential island distilleries, offering a fascinating diversity of aromatic profiles. In addition to its emblematic role as a bottler, Adelphi is today also a recognized distiller, with the opening in 2014 of the Ardnamurchan Distillery, symbolizing its commitment to quality and innovation.
The Adelphi label proudly features the iconic drawing of the "Dancey Man", an animated illustration from the mid-19th century depicting Sir William Gladstone performing an energetic 'Pas de Bas' on a barley ear. This symbol celebrates the adoption of revolutionary legislation granting distillers the right to be taxed only on the amount of whisky remaining in the casks at maturity, and not on the initial volume, thus revolutionizing the Scottish whisky industry.
Breath of the Isles is an exceptional whisky distilled in 2007 at a secret distillery located on one of the most secret and preserved Scottish islands. It benefited from an ideal aging of 14 years in Oloroso Sherry refill casks, giving it a deep aromatic richness and remarkable complexity. This limited edition consists of only 1,020 bottles, making each bottle a rare collector's piece.
