CHARTREUSE - Yellow Cuvée of the MOF - Best Craftsmen of France Sommeliers - Jeroboam Format - 45%
The Order of the Chartreuse has existed for over 500 years since, in 1605, in a Chartreuse monastery in Vauvert, a small suburb of Paris, the monks received a precious gift from Duke François Hannibal d'Estrées: an ancient manuscript called "Elixir," nicknamed "Elixir of Long Life." This rare document is very likely the work of a 16th-century alchemist, endowed with deep knowledge of medicinal plants and herbs, as well as expert mastery in assembling, infusing, and macerating no fewer than 130 of them to create a perfectly balanced tonic. The recipe was so complex that only a few extracts were initially used in Vauvert. In the early 18th century, this precious manuscript was sent to the Mother House of the Order, La Grande Chartreuse, located in the mountains near Grenoble. It was there that the Monastery's Apothecary, Brother Jérôme Maubec, managed to unlock the mystery and, in 1737, wrote the practical formula for preparing this Elixir, validated in 1764. In 1903, the Chartreuse distillery was nationalized by the French government, forcing the monks to leave. After the 1929 bankruptcy, the monks regained ownership of the Chartreuse brand, returned to their original distillery, built in 1860 at Fourvoirie near the Monastery, and relaunched production of the authentic Chartreuse liqueurs. However, in 1935, a landslide almost completely destroyed Fourvoirie, pushing production to be transferred to Voiron, where it became the historic and current production center.
The careful selection, crushing, and blending of the secret herbs, medicinal plants, and other natural ingredients used in making the liqueurs are carried out directly in the monastery by two expert monks. Once blended, these ingredients are sent to Voiron where they are first macerated in a rigorously selected alcohol before distillation. The resulting liqueurs then undergo prolonged aging for several years in huge oak barrels, resting in the maturation cellar which offers one of the longest aging periods in the world, guaranteeing each bottle a unique aromatic profile and incomparable richness.
