LEDAIG - 18 years old - Batch No. 4 - 46.3% ABV
The Tobermory Distillery is located on the Isle of Mull, a picturesque island off the west coast of Scotland. Founded in 1798, it remains the only active whisky distillery on the Isle of Mull and is one of the oldest commercial distilleries in Scotland, renowned for the exceptional quality of its single malts. In 1797, John Sinclair, a merchant specializing in kelp harvesting, initially applied for a lease of 57 acres in the Ledaig area with the aim of establishing housing and a distillery. His initial request was denied, granting him only permission to set up a brewery. However, determined and visionary, he persisted with his project and, a year later, the Ledaig distillery was born, marking the beginning of a rich and inspiring history.
In the 1930s, the distillery suffered a severe setback due to the Great Depression and Prohibition in the United States, causing production to halt for 41 years. It was only in 1993, after acquisition by Burn Stewart Distillers, that the distillery resumed operations. Since 2013, it has been part of the Distell group, a global leader in spirits, further enhancing its international presence. The distillery produces not only Tobermory Gin but also offers two renowned single malts: a non-peated Tobermory and a heavily peated Ledaig, which appeal to the most discerning enthusiasts.
Although both single malts are made using the same traditional pot stills, washbacks (fermentation vessels), mash tuns (mashing vessels), and the same water source, their character remains profoundly different. This essential difference comes from the nature of the malted barley used, offering connoisseurs a varied and unique aromatic palette.
Peated (~37 ppm)
