The Ben Nevis distillery, founded in 1825, is one of the oldest licensed Scottish distilleries. Located at the foot of Scotland's highest mountain, Ben Nevis, which rises to 1,345 meters above sea level, it benefits from an exceptional natural environment that shapes the unique character of its whiskies. This iconic mountain represents a strong symbol of traditional Scottish craftsmanship.
The fundamental ingredients to produce a premium Scottish whisky are water, malted barley, yeast, and peat for the smoky flavor. Downstream from Ben Nevis are two lochs, Coire Leis and Coire na’Ciste, which provide a pure, constant, and crystalline source of natural water, essential for the whisky's purity. The barley used is carefully selected: clean, plump, perfectly round, and dry, containing the optimal amount of protein to ensure perfect malting. The yeast, with its dense and pasty texture called "mastic," plays a key role in fermentation, ensuring rich and complex aromas. The peat imparts its subtle peated character through the filtration of water through the mountain's peat bogs and the smoke produced during the traditional drying of malted barley.
Since 1989, the Ben Nevis distillery has belonged to the prestigious Nikka Whisky Distilling group, based in Tokyo, thus combining Scottish tradition and Japanese excellence in the production of high-end whisky.
This exclusive edition, limited to 391 bottles, was distilled at the Ben Nevis distillery on June 7, 2016, and bottled on September 1, 2021. This exceptional whisky comes from a unique first-fill Montravel wine cask (#202), giving it remarkable aromatic richness and a distinctive peated profile.
