Hampden - 8 years old - Batch 2 - 46%
Hampden Estate is one of the oldest and most prestigious sugar plantations in Jamaica. Founded in 1753, this legendary distillery was originally owned by Mr. Archibald Stirling from Scotland. In 1779, he built the famous Hampden Great House, whose ground floor served as a rum warehouse until the early 20th century. The Farquarson family operated this iconic estate, dedicated to sugar and rum production, until 2003, when the Jamaica Sugar Company acquired it. Renowned for the exceptional quality of its lands, Hampden Estate holds the best sugarcane plots in all of Jamaica, ensuring one of the most profitable and high-quality sugar productions worldwide. Historically, Hampden rums were exclusively exported to Europe, especially to England and Scotland. In 2009, Everglades Farms Ltd, a company owned by the Hussey family, took over the estate following the asset transfer procedures of the Jamaica Sugar Company, a Jamaican state-owned company. Since this acquisition, Everglades Farms has made major investments to modernize the distillery, create sustainable jobs in the Trelawny region, and provide essential support to more than 17 local communities as well as nearby schools.
The water used in rum production comes from an exclusive mountain water collection system, ensuring unique natural purity without relying on groundwater. After use, this water is returned clean to the earth, contributing to an environmentally respectful cycle. Fermentation takes place over an extended period using carefully selected natural yeasts, offering complexity and authenticity to the rums produced. Hampden Estate proudly maintains discontinuous distillation, a rare traditional process today, with its four stills still in operation. The oldest, a John Dore still dating from 1960, has an impressive capacity of 7,560 liters. The rums undergo a rigorous tropical aging for more than 7 years, equivalent in intensity to 25 years of maturation under European climate, developing richly complex aromas. Hampden rums are produced, aged, and bottled without any artificial additives: no sugar, no tannins, no caramel, no glycerin, guaranteeing a pure and natural product.
This 8-year-old rum perfectly illustrates the excellence of traditional molasses rums, fully aged in a tropical climate, offering an unparalleled tasting experience and an authentic expression of the Jamaican terroir.
